What is Glintwein?
Glintwein, or "izvar," is a hot alcoholic drink made from red wine, heated to 75-78 degrees, often spiced with pepper, cinnamon, or cloves, and sweetened with sugar. Traditionally, it is consumed in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and the Czech Republic at Christmas markets and outdoor festivals. Glintwein is a popular hot alcoholic drink, especially in Germany, Austria, and Eastern Europe. Its roots trace back to spiced wines from the Middle Ages, which were not heated and were consumed in Northern and Central Europe. The first recipes for a drink similar to Glintwein were known in Ancient Rome.
Ingredients:
- 750 ml red wine
- 3-4 tablespoons of brown sugar or honey (depending on the type of wine – dry, semi-sweet, or sweet). The key is not to overdo it with this ingredient;
- 5-10 cloves (you can adjust the intensity of the aroma to your taste);
- 2 cinnamon sticks;
- 1 orange or 2 mandarins;
- 1 lemon;
- 1 apple or a quince.
Pour the glintwein into mugs, garnish with a slice of lemon or orange, and enjoy its delightful aroma with your loved ones! After all, nothing compares to a glass of hot glintwein by the fire on a cold winter evening, surrounded by friends or family.
